Under the title 'Social Condenser is LIVE' @steemitblog announced the split of the Steemit 'Social' website and the Steemit 'Wallet' website. Where until now you had 1 website (steemit.com) for both (social and financial) you'll now have to go to two separate websites: steemit.com and steemitwallet.com.
As I immediately commented on their post: I believe most Steemians will have no idea this was coming. Why?
- They don't follow @steemitblog (or have missed several updates in which they announced this was coming since our feeds are so crowded)
- They don't use steemit.com on Desktop and therefor don't see the pinned messages in the right sidebar
- There is no 'forced' pop-up or banner or notification system on steemit.com that lets users know about these big changes
Why the change?
Details can be read on @steemitblog, but in simple wording (I hope) that most of you might like:
When the social and financial part of steemit.com function separate from each other there will be less security risks: for many simple actions on the Steem blockchain you don't need to use 'high level' private keys, but many Steemians do. Some might even use their Master Key for everything they do on Steemit.com and other apps. Not anymore. From now on a warning will appear if you use a key that is too 'high level' for the transaction you make. (In short: for most things you do daily you only need your posting key.)
Check out this video for more information about private keys:
A second advantage is that because financial transactions are now away from the social website there is less concern about making changes on steemit.com - development on steemit.com can go faster because a mistake on a social app has less consequences than making mistakes on a financial app. Steemit, Inc even suggested it will be easier to approve/roll-out changes to steemit.com coming from the community. That's good news guys!
And yes, all this is also the reason why you might now see some ads on steemit.com - since it doesn't affect your financial information it is now 'safe' for Steemit, Inc to test this out - as far as I know as an experiment.
If you don't like ads: use a different front-end like steempeak.com, or if you do like to use steemit.com you can download the Brave Browser which blocks everything for you while giving you a fast and smooth browsing experience overall :-)
Well, that was a quick update in which I write it up like I understood everything so far. Correct me if I'm wrong, ask me if you think I know more!
Cheers and remember that these things are often quicker to get used to than you think now!
