Discussing what a house means to us we did a little exercise where we wrote down what 'our next house' should be, in order of importance. My wish for our next house is of practical nature. It should contain no stairs (for physical reasons), it should be close to public transport so it take me the least effort to go places and it should be in my favourite city. A house, for me, is a thing that carries you, supports you, that makes other things possible, a base in life from which to experience everything else.
My boyfriend wants a house to be charming, cosy, and have nice surroundings. For him the house itself is the dream, the thing he wants. He wants the house, I want the life that is supported by the house. For me the house should be not too expensive, so we have money to travel, for example, but for him, if he has the house he wants to upgrade it, make it better, the traveling will be done in the house.
After the first exercise we looked at our priority lists, trying to find houses that would match both our wishes, at least the three most important wishes we both had for our house. We found houses. They were just costing... Too much. It's the house we could buy if STEEM goes to that moon, or, and that's what frightened me, if I would get a job that would pay part of the mortgage.
It's my belief we should not create that kind of prison for ourselves. To have to work, both, to pay for just a house, it's just not the rat race I want for myself. I want a simple life, where things can fall apart for a few years without experiencing all kinds of worldly, financial, worries on top of it.
But still, the house we could both live in would need a lot of money.
In the end I asked him if we couldn't just pack our bags and go travel... We always circle back to this.
What does a house mean to you? Is it a necessity? A dream? Something practical or something more spiritual? A goal to achieve, or a place from which to achieve goals? I'd love to hear your thoughts!
