Halfway through our second leg of the North-Coast 500, we decided to stop at Inverewe Gardens. We had already been driving for a few hours, and a good rest on such a long drive is important - we still had quite a few hours to go.
I like gardens less than gorgeous beaches and wild forests, but I appreciate the art of designing, growing and maintaining a lovely garden. I find British gardens a nice mix of cultivation without combing every centimeter of grass. The Inverewe Gardens were no exception.
[I mean... I wouldn't mind a garden like this, right?!]
From quiet to loud
A magical thing happened during our walk through the wilder parts of the gardens. It was a grey and rainy day, you could clearly hear the wind blowing. But at some point, our surroundings suddenly went quiet. A total quiet. The wind and Scottish weather apparently were not able to reach this part of the garden. Which was exactly how it was designed.
The design of the gardens made it possible for tropical trees and plants to grow here. I will show you one of these tropical plants, the hand of my boyfriend used to be able to understand the size of it:

We walked on, and enjoyed the calm. Then we heard the wind again. We were walking towards the borders of the garden, towards a viewpoint over the Loch.
[The last meters before...]
We had arrived the viewpoint. A small bench was put below the trees, overlooking the Loch. An amazing view, although the mist of rain prevented us from looking far. I love a little wind and rain, so I was happy to sit here for a few minutes. But at some point it got cold.

We walked back. Back into the protective parts of the garden. Back to what was clearly a very smart designed place, where you could ignore the sometimes harsh Scottish weather for a while.
