Some people leave a mark

She's one of those people. Beautiful, smart, full of life. She taught me things. To bind books, to create marble paintings. She is a mother of boys. A wife. A teacher and mentor to many. A 'what you see is what you get' kind of person. No-nonsense, direct - even for Dutch standards.

She was never the cuddly type - but the love for her sons was visible with every smile she gave when they dropped by one of her classes unannounced.

I made her a website. Gifted her a photo of antique books I had made. She loved it. She made me a notebook with my name on it in golden letters. We drank coffee. We laughed.

I looked up to her. She was always struggling to earn enough with her skills. Not because she wasn't good enough - but because people think restoring real physical objects is a waste of time and money.

She shared stories. I wanted to learn from her. I remember thinking "She is me in 20 years time" - I recognize parts of her that I loved that I realize are parts of me that I love.

It hit me hard: the e-mail that she won't be with us anymore in a few weeks time. Some people shape your world. She shaped parts of mine. I'll miss her. Her boys will miss her. But she says she's content with the life she lived so for her the news is not that bad.

I hope I'll get to her level of peace someday. That feeling of 'I've lived enough'. Let's all strive towards that goal.

A hug.
