[Slice of HOME] The view from my balcony (new photo series)

Today I'm introducing a new photo series that will be ongoing. I've called it 'Slice of HOME', since it will be showing pictures I take while actually being home or in and around places I also perceive to be my direct surroundings, like in and around the city of Rotterdam in the Netherlands, while shopping, using public transport, or just taking a short walk.

Home versus travel

Until now I've been posting a lot of travel pictures, and although I will keep doing that, I believe the Steemit community is also a great place to share stories and/or pictures that are closer to daily life. Because even though I can tell you many yummy stories about all the places I've traveled, these travel stories are told from my perspective. What I mean by that: because The Netherlands is my home, it is from that perspective I will perceive other countries. What is special to me in Lisbon, might be very normal to you. (Because you were born in Portugal or you live in a similar culture.)

So for you to understand my travel stories, it might be interesting how I perceive my home, the Netherlands, too.

My literal home

I live in a lovely almost hundred years old building block in Rotterdam. It has been remodeled a few years ago. There used to be no showers in the houses at first, everyone used a shared bathing space in the center of the block. Of course, they've added showers since then, in the 70s, and 5 years ago they decided to upgrade the houses again: by creating 1 house of what used to be 2.

So, my boyfriend and I now live in a space that used to be occupied by two families! I often can't believe how they managed to do that, but times and perspectives change. Apparently, we have gotten used to both showers in our houses and waaay more space per person.

Some facts

The building project actually deserves a more detailed post with lots of pictures which is still on my 'to do list'. You would say taking pictures this close to home is the easiest thing to do, but somehow it hasn't happened yet :-)

Some fun facts for now though:

  • Before this building was built no house in the Netherlands would have a flat roof!
  • Also: they had never before built a layer of houses upon another layer of houses! (I have to check if this was even the case for the whole of Europe.)
  • The houses were meant to feel like 'a village', to lure people from the countryside to live in 'the big city' for work.
  • The bathing space in the middle of this building block is now used as an art gallery. Times really do change.
  • There are many types of houses, most have two layers, some have as much as four.
  • Some houses have been bought, most are rented.
  • Each house used to have a tiny private garden, which has now turned into a communal central garden.
  • The 'square' you see on the picture? It's only one of four :-)
  • There are gates in the building that are being opened and closed at morning and at by a concierge. This keeps the place quite private.

What does your home look like?

I'm curious: what does the place you perceive as home look like? If you already made a post on this subject: feel free to share the link below! If you didn't yet: I encourage you to create a post yourself and notify me once published!
