Short updates from a short Dutch trip #9

One of the nice places in Nijmegen is it's still existing Honig Complex, an old factory type building currently being used by pop-up restaurants, stores, art studios, small bakeries and an epic coffee roaster.

From what I understand by talking to the bicycle store owner I rented a bike from is that they were allowed to rent space for about 7 years, after which the Honig Complex will make space for houses.

Now, in Rotterdam we would try to keep a building like this, fortify it, and make a permanent arty/hipstery place out of it, but apparently it was calculated that tearing it down and building houses on this ground was way more economical than trying to strengthen the building, so after 2021 it's not possible to eat/drink/shop here anymore.

As you can see the outside of this building doesn't even look that good, but the 'cover picture' of this little post shows the true potential it has/had. Meesterproef is the restaurant where we dined and had some drinks 2 times during our stay, and it was worth every bite and minute and cent we spend here.

I'd love to come back here but I'll probably not be in Nijmegen again in the next few months, so I'll have to keep it as a memory.

The good news is: all start-ups/pop-ups have found a permanent space in the upcoming neighbourhood, so not all will be lost.

I just hope the person who will be living here will appreciate the views on the river as much as I did while sitting on this terrace <3
