Short updates from a short Dutch trip #5

A few posts back I mentioned how the city Nijmegen, that is build near one of the bigger rivers of the country, was turning its back towards the water instead of fully embracing it like my own hometown Rotterdam does.

These houses are actually facing the water, but there's walls between the houses and the water, a parking place, and quite a lot of space in the form of bicycle paths and pedestrian lanes as well.

Of course, this makes it safer to live here in case of flooding, which The Netherlands will definitely encounter in the next few decades (some provinces already had a big amount of flooding in the past few weeks unfortunately a sign of disasters to come), and probably it's policy to keep it safe by not building too close to the water.

Since I'm also looking, in a way, for places that are a possibility to move to and that would keep me safe (I now live under sea level, can you even imagine? :D) now that the climate seems to enter a new era, I'm noticing these details and write them down in my mental notebook.

In this case:

  • Positive: Nijmegen is above sea level
  • Negative: The river isn't fully enjoyed to its potential, yet.

Well, I'm not in a hurry, luckily. Or at least, so I think, maybe I'm wrong and I should get the hell out of my house below sea level.
