There - that city you can see through the bridge - you can see Nijmegen. A lovely old city with the oldest shopping street of The Netherlands, now filled with boutique shops as opposed to bigger chain stores present in other streets.
I love cities that are build near or around a river. I live in one - Rotterdam, several times bigger than Nijmegen, but the river gives it a similar vibe.
This city, Nijmegen, still has to learn to make better use of the river by having more shops and especially bars and restaurants facing the water - it's clear it used to be policy to build the city with its back towards the water, houses looking towards the center/church instead of the wide open water. But from what I've seen Nijmegen is starting to build more and closer to the waterside, especially houses, but also a few restaurants.
At least I had one of my best cups of coffee so far near the water.
Might be interesting to love on 'this' side of the river as well - looking at the city itself, instead of living in it - the view is lovely from here, and bicycling the bridge is a treat in itself.
I'll come back in a few years to see how the waterside has been developed.
