These photographs in my 'through dirty train windows' series are selected especially for @kotturinn who is not a fan of monochromes in general 'except maybe for portraits', and recently asked me questions like 'how does this look like in colours?', or 'what time of the day did you take this shot?', in essence wanting to know what colours are in the picture.
I tend do go for a nice edit to monochrome once shapes, textures or high-contrast are the main subject of interest in a shot. Colours can distract (me) from appreciating those basic elements. But indeed, it can add a lot of information to a photograph as well, and when I feel it does I keep my images in colour.
Both shots in this post work better in colour, since it includes a reflection of a light that was inside the train, and when converted to monochrome the shapes of these lights would not add to the picture, only distract from it. So I decided to leave the colours in and let the lights add to the picture, the coziness of sitting in a warm and dry train with warm yellow light, while outside the weather is wet and cold and absolutely depressing.
Both shots are taken around 18:30-18:45, light from the day leaving soon, only faster thanks to the rain and clouds. The green from the trees outside is very subdued at an hour and under circumstances like this. The yellow from the light is the only bright and happy element.
