In The Netherlands vegetables and flowers are grown in greenhouses, with a lot of them concentrated in the municipality called 'Westland'.

I worked in one of those greenhouses when I was a teenager. A very normal side job to do for young people growing up in these surroundings: collect 'ready for sale' tomatoes, cut and select flowers (which is what I did), plant new plants in rows.

Although the lights in Westland are much more regulated now (the constant burning of lights confused the sleeping and breeding patterns of local birds) the lights of the greenhouses are still very much dominating the surroundings.

This day we went to the beach, which I love most on stormy days, and decided to have a simple dinner in one of the beach restaurants. Afterwards we walked back to our car, and I noticed the crazy colours the greenhouse lights created while they shone on the dark rainy clouds.

A family walked by while I was taking pictures in the rain. They created lovely silhouettes against the doomsday night sky with yellow-pink clouds. All I did was 'up' the contrast in these pictures: a real 'no filter needed' kind of phenomenon.

The lights in the Westland are not a new occurrence for me. But circumstances made me 'see again', something I love about being a photographer.
