Imperfection makes perfect.
As a photographer beauty isn't always easily defined.
Generally, when we think about something beautiful we think about a symmetrical face, a grand building designed by a talented architect, a piece of nature with its measurements perfectly aligned with the Golden Standard.
Many photographers look for these subjects in pictures as well.
For me, a pictures becomes worth taking when it's imperfect:
- A beach with cloudy skies
- A perfect building with something happening in front of it
- A face of a child with a smear on it from drinking chocolate milk
- Gorgeous tiles but with pieces broken off, an imbalance in the pattern
[In the lovely and colourful city of Lisbon one can find many imperfections. I left this place with a heart and mind full of pictures. I've mostly taken pictures of its many gorgeous imperfections. Try to count the many ways in which this picture is imperfect. Think of travel magazines to see what this picture 'should have' looked like.]
I take these pictures with love. Every imperfection shares a story, shows life, makes things real instead of over-polished.
Imperfection makes perfect.
For me beauty often lies in spotting and capturing imperfection. Whether you're a photographer or not: what makes something beautiful to you?
