I love the word serendipity, which broadly means that moment when you're in the right place at the right time and find something of value. In photography we also have the famous 'the decisive moment', when things align and the shutter clicks on exactly the right moment.
I love finding serendipity in my photos, but for those of you who think that's all there is to it, I will reveal a big secret: a but of 'the decisive moment' can definitely be created. It doesn't all overcome a photographer.
For example, when I see electricity lines, and a flock of birds flying up from one of the roofs, I can follow them with the lens of my camera until the are perfectly aligned within these lines. See the two birds basically flying perfectly within these lines? That's called anticipation and waiting for the decisive moment.
Now, what I might call serendipity is the fact there's a weather cock, a wind vane with a bird on top, on the roof top on the right side of the photo. That, I had not seen while I was chasing the birds.
That is my bonus detail. That was my serendipity.
