The creative community on Steemit is quite big, and I'm having a lot of fun browsing through the creations of others. While doing so last week I found out about the Global Collage "A Steemit Arts Community Collage powered by Steem with @slothicorn". Although I'm not part of the @slothicorn movement (yet) I have been following their progress and initiatives. Because creating a Global Collage seemed like a fun thing to do with fellow Steemians I decided to join the Slothicorn Discord just for this.

Yesterday I got notified by the Global Collage initiator @playitforward that it was 'my turn'! I noticed the collage existed of many sketches and drawings overlapping each other, so I am the first photographer to add to the project. As @playitforward said: "You're a pioneer!"
THE IDEA
Global Collage's vision is to have one massive art piece with several artists taking turns to layer on to it. Why? To bring artists together to form an even stronger community and inspire others of the power of creative collaboration.
MY INTERPRETATION
In my addition to the collage I mainly focussed on the word layer. As a photographer this is what I do: find layers in my surroundings and taking these into account while taking a picture.
Layers within the Global Collage
While looking at the collage I noticed a few things: the eclectic mix of creatures, the (lack of) spacing between them, the references to water, the sea (the shark and waves) and sky (the rainbow).
Well, isn't this then a big beach party somewhere on the planet?
THE PROCESS
I decided to add some parts of different photographs that reference sea and the tropics to the picture.
- One is a beach near Barcelona. I cut out the sea and sky in Photoshop.
- The other is a black and white palm tree on Tenerife Island. I cut this out and converted it to black and white in Photoshop.
- I wanted to add some 'sun' too because I imagined it would look great with the silhouette of the palm tree, so I added a simple sun to the collage too. (They are hard to photograph as a shape ;-))
I decided to 'cut out' the collage from its white background so there would be more empty space on the borders of the collage that would sort of 'blend' with the sea, if I hadn't done this there would simply be the white box on top of a blue sea, so I felt this was necessary.
THE LAYERS
Starting point
The Global Collage was last altered by @jnmarteau, so I got it like this: https://steemitimages.com/0x0/https://steemitimages.com/DQmYwAQJz5rQ6tVEwyX1ek5xfhud3WqCqfifqfFcqagVMqB/Global%20Collage_03012018.jpg [Take a look at his entry and process too!]
FINAL RESULT
FINAL WORDS
This was fun! I have some doubts how this will all turn out if the canvas needs to be expanded in the future, but I'm sure the creative minds that join the Global Collage will find a way to make it work!
Thanks @playitforward for initiating this, and: good luck to all the other artists who come after me!
