The more famous and probably more extensively photographed bridge in Rotterdam is not the Willemsbrug from yesterdays post, but the Erasmusbrug, a light-blue painted bridge that was shipped as a whole over water to it's current place.
The Erasmusbrug is sometimes nicknamed 'The Swan' because of it long bent neck and horizontal base and connects one of the main shopping streets in Rotterdam to the South and less populair part of the city.
ERASMUSBRUG FACTS:
- Was finished in 1996
- Was first swinging in strong winds, which is now prevented with extra shock dampers
- It's total span is 802 meters
- Has an 89-metre-long (292 ft) bascule bridge for ships that cannot pass under the bridge
It's a truly lovely bridge to walk over due to a nice pedestrian lane. It's nice to bicycle on as well, although a bit steep especially when coming from the South and going to the North. But a steep climb also means a steep and FAST descend! So all in all you'll get your reward for crossing this bridge every time.
Next to pedestrians and bicyclers the bridge carries cars and trams. When the bascule bridge has to open so some ships can pass I tend to enjoy the views from the bridge a lot especially when I was driving there on the bicycle: it's no punishment to watch either side of the river plus it's often a nice break from the steep climb as well ;-)
Don't let anyone notice you're out of breath! Just look like you're patiently waiting for the bridge to close ;-)

One day during my walks I found someone left this gorgeous flower on a stone bench. I framed it with the bridge in background. How did the flower get here? Does it carry a romantic or maybe sad story?
