Now, one of the amazing things about Steemit and why I think the communities that will be launched (somewhere in the future?) will be a great feature, is that even with just 60000 or so active users I've found a lot of very specific niches already being present here.
People who like exactly the same thing even though it's not a very broad topic.
Abandoned shit
A few weeks ago I learned about the 'Abandoned Shit Weekly Contest', which is held by @customnature. The idea is simple: share abandoned shit and do this weekly under the #aswcontest tag after he announced that week's theme.
Abandoned shit is definitely my kinda thing to take pictures of, and I love to do it whenever I have the chance. Living in The Netherlands which can be considered as one big city with some green patches for cows and windmills, it's hard to find abandoned anything since all things abandoned must make room for new stuff immediately.
My best chance is taking a roadtrip to Belgium where the government doesn't seem to care as much, or try my luck in Scotland where abandoned houses are scattered throughout the landscape.
This week's theme: abandoned graveyards
This week's theme is 'abandoned graveyards'. Now, since I'm writing about my road trip through Scotland and I do this in more or less chronological order, I posted a photo series of a gorgeous abandoned graveyard I visited close to Durness exactly one week ago. Today I found out about 'the theme' and realized my mistake: I should have kept my photo series for the contest!
After posting the link on his blog just so others could enjoy it, he suggested I could enter anyway if I re-posted one of the photos just for the contest. After some consideration, I decided to do this and add one picture for the contest I didn't put in the original post. So even those who have already seen the original series actually have something new to see ;-)
My entry for the Abandoned Graveyard theme
Some words on promoting the contest: it's very specific and you might have to figure out where in your country / city you are able to find Abandoned shit, but it's just so much fun! In these places you'll find nature takes over, or artists have left traces, or you just encounter a certain atmosphere that is worth it to capture on camera. There are guest judges too, this week's guest judge is @creepycrazylife, apparently a fan of all things... well creepy and crazy.
Finally, as per @customnature's words: the contest is NOT a photography contest! So it's not about the best picture winning, but about sharing the coolest Abandoned shit content. There's even a Discord group I have yet to join where we all can share our awesome finds :-)
Here then finally my entry:
[From the original post. The tombstones clearly overgrown with moss, the abandoned church without any roof left in the background.]
And, the 'fresh' picture I left out before since it didn't add to the original series:
[An overview of the setting: abandoned ruin of a church, fully overgrown with climbing plants, tombstones surrounding it, while overlooking the sea and Balnakeil Beach]
Enjoy adding your pictures to the contest too, or just check out the #aswcontest tag for more!
