When I still used Facebook, you know, until a few weeks ago ;-), I posted a picture of a lovely cloud deck with a hole in it. I was just mesmerized by the light that would come through such a hole in the clouds.
A fellow Facebooker, one with a boat and therefore with a lot of knowledge about all things connected to the weather, told me this kind of cloud was very special and even had a name.
Now, in Dutch, this type of cloud is called a 'Pilotengat', which roughly translates to 'Hole by Pilot'. I looked it up today, and in English it's called a Fallstreak Hole, which, according to Wikipedia, is: "A fallstreak hole (also known as a hole punch cloud, punch hole cloud, skypunch, cloud canal or cloud hole) is a large gap, usually circular or elliptical, that can appear in cirrocumulus or altocumulus clouds."
When I researched a bit more I even found a (Dutch) website that records 'sightings' of these special clouds since apparently, we don't know much about them, yet.
While driving the road from Applecross to Lochcarron, I discovered another one. This time I already knew what it was and of course took extra care in taking the picture.
[I love the way the hole creates a bright light on the water]
Have you ever seen one of these 'holes' yourself? If so, did you know it actually is kind of special to see it?
