A hidden gem in the East part of Scotland is 'Glen Lyon'. It was supposed to be the most quiet and and beautiful and picturesque glen 'of them all'. We would never have found it if it weren't for a tip from a local: "This is where I go when I have a day off!", so of course we went. (And no, when looking on a map you wouldn't think it was this gorgeous!)
She promised us: "You can do a loop!" - and if it weren't for her reassuring promise we would probably have given up driving all the way round, because at some point during our trip there were holes in the road so deep it really felt like the road would stop existing. But that's input for a follow-up story.
Right before we drove that very bad part of 'the loop' of Glen Lyon we encountered a gorgeous piece of human landscape intervention after driving all the way along the River Lyon: the Glen Lyon Dam. It's one of the great sights of Glen Lyon, and it's one of the more beautiful concrete structures I've ever seen 'disrupting' but not spoiling a lovely landscape.
I've selected three pictures of the Dam and let you enjoy it for yourself.

[I have not been able to climb to a point where I could picture the whole of the structure, but this shot still shows how lengthy the Dam is. It's kind of pretty isn't it?]
BONUS TIP 1: If you're ever in the neighbourhood: really try to drive 'the loop' of Glen Lyon, and don't stop even if you believe the road ends!
BONUS TIP 2: Also: don't forget to stop at the little old 'post office'! They serve the best cakes and locally roasted coffee. It's a weird and welcome encounter after driving some of the narrow roads and the quality of the cakes and coffee are of a quality you would not expect there. A truly alienating experience. And no, you won't miss it, it's basically the only stone building you will encounter after a long while of 'nothing' :-)
